26 January Republic Day Speech English

Republic Day Speech for January 26th in English

Good morning everyone,
Respected Principal, teachers, and my dear friends,

It is an honor and privilege to stand before you today to speak on a very special occasion that fills the heart of every Indian with pride and joy-Republic Day. On this day, 26th January 1950, the Constitution of India came into effect, marking the beginning of India as an independent, democratic, and republic nation.

This day holds immense significance in our history. It was on this date that our nation’s Constitution came into force, replacing the Government of India Act (1935), and establishing India as a republic governed by its own laws and principles.

Why is 26th January Special?

While August 15, our Independence Day, marks the end of colonial rule, January 26 symbolizes the beginning of our journey as a self-governed nation. The date was specifically chosen because, on 26th January 1930, the Indian National Congress had declared Purna Swaraj or Complete Independence as its ultimate goal. Adopting the Constitution on this date was a tribute to that historic resolution and our long struggle for freedom.

What is a Republic?

A republic means that the head of the state is elected by the people rather than being a hereditary monarch. In our country, the people have the ultimate power to elect their leaders. It signifies that power is in the hands of the people and their elected representatives, making every citizen an integral part of the governance system.

Significance of the Constitution

Our Constitution is not just a book of laws; it is the backbone of our democracy. It provides us with fundamental rights like equality, freedom, justice, and education, while also reminding us of our duties as citizens of this great nation. The preamble of the Constitution declares India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic.

The Constitution was the result of the tireless efforts of the Drafting Committee led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who is rightly known as the Father of the Indian Constitution. It is the longest written Constitution in the world and reflects the values of liberty, equality, and fraternity inspired by our freedom struggle.

Unity in Diversity

One of the most beautiful aspects of India is its unity in diversity. India is a land of multiple cultures, languages, traditions, and religions, yet we stand together as one nation. Republic Day reminds us to celebrate and respect these differences while working together for the betterment of our country.

Republic Day Celebrations

Every year, Republic Day is celebrated with grandeur across the country. The biggest celebration takes place at Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath) in New Delhi. The event begins with the unfurling of the national flag by the President of India, followed by the national anthem.

The grand parade showcases the strength and diversity of India. Our armed forces display their might through tanks, missiles, and fly-pasts, while the cultural richness of various states is displayed through vibrant tableaus. Brave soldiers and civilians are honored with awards like Param Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and other gallantry awards.

Schools, colleges, and institutions also celebrate this day with flag-hoisting, cultural programs, speeches, and patriotic songs. It is a day to remember and honor the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters, soldiers, and leaders who made our republic a reality.

Our Responsibilities as Citizens

Republic Day is not just about celebrating our past; it is also about reflecting on our present and committing ourselves to a better future. As citizens, it is our duty to uphold the values of the Constitution. Some of the ways we can contribute to our nation include:

  • Respecting and following the laws of the land.
  • Actively participating in democratic processes like voting.
  • Promoting equality, peace, and harmony in our society.
  • Protecting public property and keeping our surroundings clean.
  • Standing against corruption and injustice.

Conclusion

As we celebrate the 74th Republic Day this year, let us remember the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom and worked tirelessly to give us a Constitution that guarantees us our rights and liberties. Let us pledge to honor their legacy by being responsible citizens and contributing to the progress of our nation.

India is our home, and it is up to us to make it stronger, brighter, and more united. Remember, our unity is our strength, and together, we can overcome any challenge.

Let us take pride in our nation and resolve to build a future that we and the coming generations will be proud of.

Thank you.
Jai Hind! 🇮🇳
